the problem with avocado

All Peachfronted Conure owners should be aware that avocado is poisonous to parrots. Don't feed your pet avocado or anything made with avocado, such as guacamole. Have you ever wondered why? After all, it's certainly not intuitive that this healthy fruit for humans would poison parrots. And it doesn't kill all birds; indeed, in Costa Rica, our guide checked fruiting avocado trees in search of the Resplendent Quetzel, because these magnificent birds follow the avocado trees for the fruit -- and it worked, since we found a nice flock to observe in record time.

Avocado contains a natural fungicide called persin. While the poison may be concentrated in the pit, it can seep into the edible meat of the fruit. It may also be found in the leaves, bark, and skin. For whatever reason, parrots, as well as fungi, are sensitive to this poison. My Peachfront Conures have asked that you hold the "fungus amungus" jokes.

A thought: Parrots chew, and a parrot who chews on your potted avocado plant could die. I long ago gave away all of my avocado plants and starts to people who didn't have birds in their home. Better safe than sorry, as far as I'm concerned.
