Welcome to the Best Free Peachfronted Conure Information on the Planet

I've lived with Peachfront Conures Aratinga aurea for 30 years. I've bred 'em, trained 'em, even visited Bolivia to observe them in the wild. For more about me, click right here.

from birds in brazil: a natural history

Having learned what it takes for a Louisiana resident to get a visa to visit Brazil, I'm forced to conclude that they don't want me to visit. So I won't be going any time soon. Be that as it may, let's take a peek into Helmut Sick's huge 1993 masterwork from the Princeton University Press. He rates the Peachfronted Conure as "one of our best-known and most abundant psittacids," so it's definitely a place I would like to visit if they ever liberalize the tourism laws.

Here he provides some hints here and there to how Peachfronted Conures exploit termites:

  • "In the cerrado of Minas Gerais a flock of Aratinga aurea was seen catching winged termites on the ground as they came out of a terrestrial termite nest; possibly the parakeets had had contact with termites when they excavated their nest in an arboreal termite nest..."
  • "Aratinga aurea excavates its nesting holes especially in nests of the termite Constrictotermes cyphergaster."

Hey, choosy Peachfronts know what they like, and they're sticking with the plan.
